So by now you probably know about the all new Ford Fiesta that was unveiled in early 2017, and may have also been informed of an ST version of the hatchback. Perhaps not all news then. What’s intriguing in this post is the the new ST model will feature Launch Control. What could that be? More on that a bit later, for now let’s divulge a bit of information on the little runner: It will bee powered by Ford’s all-new 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder engine that delivers 147kW and 290 N.m of torque, twisting the front wheels from standstill to 100km/h in a claimed 6,5 seconds and go on to reach a 230 km/h top speed. These performance figures put up a real fight against the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Renault Clio RS!
So what is this Launch Control i’m going on about? Well basically you Select “Launch Control” from cluster menu, engage first gear and apply full throttle, wait for the car to tell you it’s ready for launch, release the clutch and off you go! This helps get the best torque delivery for the best possible take-off and optimised traction control. This is aided by the introduction of a Limited-slip differential (LSD) which has been fine-tuned to work with the enhanced Torque Vectoring Control technology to deliver maximum grip on dry and wet surfaces.
So when the Fiesta ST goes on sale here in RSA, it’s likely to feature only the 3-Door version seeing that we missed on a 5-Door last time around. It promises to be a fun to drive little hatch once again, but now with added extra tricks and fine tuning. We think Ford is onto a winner here!
